Chapter 6- Peace restored

Disclaimer: You know the drill...

Kou and I were riding on Crystal and Obsidian to the tower, with Sharrakor’s army pursuing us. We flew up to the last floor. There was a large door, made of white marble. In front of that was a human in the robes of a high officer in the Violet Order.
“Well, well. Looks like more people have come to play.” the person giggled.
“What are the three riddles?” Kou asked ignoring the first comment.
“All right, all right. Here is the first riddle.” the person sighed
“A maiden’s head so deathly still. Cold and quiet, yet not ill. Her long tresses hang towards the sky. Hair that burns when it is dry. Food to man and creature’s hair. Name both her and her hair.” the person asked.
I thought for a while. Then it clicked.
“She is a rock. Her hair is the seaweed that grows from the rock.” I answered.
“Too easy. Must ask something more difficult.” the person groaned.
“I have it! This is the second riddle.” the person proclaimed.
“A traveller begins a journey. For the first week, he is carried south. For the second week, he carries others. In the third week, he flies up into the sky. In the fourth week, he falls back down. Who is the traveller?”
I smirked, “Is that the best you can do? The traveller is an iceberg to begin with. Then it is free-flowing water. Then it is a cloud. Then, it is rain, or snow.”
“Too easy! Too easy! You are a clever one. I must find a tricky riddle.” the person snickered.
He thought for a while. “Got it! Throw a stone into a lake; it never reaches the bottom. Look at your reflection; nothing is seen. Cry your heart out; tears don’t fall. Give your soul; face betrayal.”
I paused, not knowing how to answer the question.
“I know the answer.” said Kou after a few minutes.
“It’s love. ‘Throw a stone into a lake; it never reaches the bottom.’ It is love which leads you astray, never reaching your goal. ‘Look at your reflection; nothing is seen.’ Love ends up leaving you empty, with no more identity. ‘Cry your heart out; tears don’t fall.’ Love leaves no more tears, no more emotions left. ‘Give your soul; face betrayal.’ In the end, love betrays you, leaving you with nothing.” Kou answered quietly.
“How can such a dismal description be love?” I exclaimed. “I don’t believe it. Love isn’t something that in the end just leaves you with pain and sorrow. It is a valuable emotion that leaves beautiful memories.”
“Ah is that so?” the man asked. “Your friend doesn’t seem to think so.” “You’re mistaken about that,” Kou replied. “It is only the foolish who loses themselves because of love.” Then he muttered, “And only the foolish and inexperienced would come up with such a stupid riddle. Now let us through!”
“All right.” the person fumbled with a few switches and the door flew open.
We ran into the room, the door closing behind us. I could hear the sounds of Sharrakor’s army slaying the person. Oh well, at least they would take a while to figure out the code to open the door. That would buy us some time.
I walked to the middle of the room. There stood a white marble pillar. I placed the ‘Angel Wings’ crystal onto the pillar. Just then, Sharrakor and his army broke in. Kou brandished his sword, and tried to hold the free shadows the best he could.
“Hurry! I can’t fend them off much longer.” Kou yelled.
Crystal and Obsidian were also fending off the shadows that came to near me. The crystal began to glow a little.
Kou and the phoenixes where getting closer and closer to the middle of the room. Sharrakor was pressing them closer and closer.
Kou was soon nearly behind me.
Suddenly, Kou screamed. Sharrakor had slashed him across his torso.
“Kou!” I bent down and cradled him.
“Quick! Seal the shadows. Promise me. Don’t bother about me.” Kou whispered.
“Yes. I will. Just hang on.” I choked.
Tears flowed freely down my cheeks; I didn’t bother to wipe them off.
Kou was freezing. He caressed my cheek. As I cried, his hand became slack and slid off.
I stood up reluctantly. I promised Kou that I would seal the shadows, and I intended to keep the promise.
Suddenly, words came flooding through my mind and involuntarily formed on my lips.
“Key of the Light. With the powers vested in me, I release the powers shining so bright. Reveal the power, that shines your light! Purify!” I chanted.
Light poured from the crystal. All around, free shadows were evaporating into thin air. Sharrakor screamed one last, “No!” before dispersing into tiny atoms and was sucked into the crystal. The light toned down. Peace was once more.
I bent down over Kou.
“Kou, don’t leave me. I need you. I love you.”
A single tear fell down my cheek and onto his wound.
Suddenly, the Angel Wings flared to life. There was a blinding light. I covered my eyes to shield them from the blaring light.
When I uncovered them. Kou was gone.
“Kou?” I looked unbelievingly at the spot he once laid.
“Yes?” A voice behind me sounded.
I turned around, slowly, afraid to hope.
Shining blue orbs met my glistening viridian ones.
I smiled.
He smiled back.
I ran towards him. His arms opened wide. We hugged, then Kou leaned forward, I closed my eyes. He pressed his lips forward and I kissed back.
An eternity later, we broke off. Outside, fireworks boomed into pretty patterns, courtesy of Crystal and Obsidian. Kou and I smiled at each other and admired the beautiful display.
We had completed the prophesy of the Light and Darkness. Peace prevailed once more...
